Italian Wedding Traditions

I have been to a lot of weddings. As a child, my parents would bring me to every single one of our cousins, friends or paysans’ weddings. As you can guess, I am of Italian origin.

Later, at 15 years old, with my violin and my voice I began to sing a play for wedding ceremonies at local churches in the city of Montreal.

Fast forward 17 years, I am at a wedding almost every weekend from the months of April to December. From playing modern pop hits, to performing traditional songs from different cultures like Ahesta Bero for Afghan weddings, Mabrouk for Lebanese weddings, the Hora for Jewish weddings,  etc.; I love learning and celebrating different wedding traditions through music.

When it came to plan special moments during my wedding, I knew that I wanted to incorporate Italian traditions that celebrated my culture but that still had relevance.

Of course, when planning bombonieri (wedding favours), a handful of confetti (candied almonds) were attached to the ribbon for good luck. The white dress, the Big Fat Italian Wedding made up of 200 guests, all the FOOD, were all no brainers for the event.

However, one moment in particular was a must: the ribbon/streamers “first” dance.

Symbolizing good wishes and that the bride and groom have tied the knot, guests wrap up the couple with colourful streamers while the band performs a ballad. It’s so fun for the guests, and as a 2024 Bride, I can confirm it’s just as fun for the couple since it becomes harder and harder to dance with the more streamers and confetti being thrown at you 🤣

PRO TIP: I purchased a box of streamers from amazon, and placed a minimum of 4 streamer tubes on each table, hidden under the centre piece. When it came time for the dance, our MC announced to our guests to find the streamers and come to the dance floor as my husband and I watched the band start to perform the song Ti Amo by Umberto Tozzi

The band did an incredible job performing Ti Amo. As we danced, our guests wrapped more, and more, and more streamers around us until I couldn’t even see! It was so much fun to experience this moment, to feel the love from our guests.

It was definitely a “pinch me” moment, as growing up I saw this dance performed so many times. To be on the other side was just a dream come true.

What was left when the song was over? Laughs and memories for a lifetime ❤️ … and a pile of streamers…
